Thank You London – we’ll be back!

The first international side event, SMASH London, took place on 8-9 May in the UK. SMASH London brought together sport and health technology startups, the big industry players and investors from Finland and the UK. With full houses on both days, the organisers of SMASH along with the strategic partners Business Finland and London Sport were all smiles after the event.

Meria Heikelä, Director at Business Finland:
– The launch of first ever SMASH London was over expectations. The cooperation between Business Finland and the organisers of SMASH was great both before and during the two-day event.

– The second day of SMASH London was held at the recidence of the Finnish Ambassador Päivi Luostarinen and it gathered a huge audience. On both days, Finnish start-ups showcased their expertise with the finest results. The concept of SMASH is an excellent way for Londoners to get acquainted with Finnish start-ups.

Tove Okunniwa, CEO of London Sport:
– We are delighted to be supporting and bringing SMASH to London and fostering the relationship with the Nordic ecosystem. SMASH London will allow us to share knowledge from each market, trends and create a highway for start-ups and investment focused on physical activity and sport.

– We want SportTech to be the next part of London’s tech revolution and collaboration with SMASH fits our ambition in Making London the Heart of the Sport Tech World.

The programme of SMASH London followed the path of the main event: interesting key note presentations and innovative pitches both from Finnish and British start-ups. Altogether 6 key note speakers and over 10 start-ups were seen on the stage. On Tuesday, the prize of the best pitch went to Deuce (UK) and on Wednesday the winning start-up was Quiske (FIN).

One of the pitching start-ups was Diske, the winner of the Health pitching competition at SMASH Helsinki 2017:

– I cannot say that I have seen all possible in the start-up world but I definitely have seen a lot. And I can say that SMASH London exceeded all my expectations. The welcome was friendly and all went on smoothly. I got lots of new contacts and all from ”the right people”. And as they say, if you can make it in London, you can make it anywhere. That’s why I am planning to attend also SMASH Iberia, says Timo Kettunen, the Founder/CEO of Diske.

All in all, SMASH London was an excellent opening to the internationalization of SMASH. And there is more to follow:

– I am very proud to say that SMASH London was a success and we’re planning the next London event in 2019 as we speak. Most importantly I genuinely feel that everyone that took part found interesting business leads which, in the end, is what it all comes down to, says Miikka Neuvonen, the CEO of SMASH.
